Zeitfiguren – ‘Quick Changes’ UdK Rundgang

We want to create a figure of time. We want to embroider. We want to make time tangible. Our slow and seemingly doing nothing becomes an anti-capitalist attitude. Embroidery offers time to look and think, to reflect. Embroidering together offers space to exchange ideas and, in our case, to tell our story. Due to cutbacks, embroidery cannot be sustained because it is unproductive and time-consuming. We embroider anyway as an act of resistance. And we embroider in such a way that we withdraw from this system and become useless, stubborn, quiet, grey. Finally, a recycling process clears the stage, leaving only empty shells behind. The craftsmanship was actually beautiful once. QUICK CHANGES: A collaboration between the study programs of Costume Design and Film Costume, Scenic Writing and Sound Studies, Acting and Narrative Film. Quick changes is a term from the world of magic, meaning a magical transformation. In theater, it refers to a very fast costume change. But what does a quick change mean in film? And more broadly – what do these drastic cultural funding cuts mean for costume designers? Costumes made from scraps? Costumes made from nothing? Are costumes really necessary? What does a broken sewing machine sound like? Does the light still turn on? Where are our limits – and what safe spaces do we absolutely need? An existential, defiant, experimental, and scenically cinematic evening of cuts – with and without costumes. "When you hit a wall, just kick it in."
